BOPP Film Thickness Guide: How to Choose the Right Micron for Packaging and Lamination

BOPP film thickness affects cost, stiffness, yield, machinability, barrier performance and the appearance of the finished package. Selecting a film only because it is the lowest price per kilogram can therefore produce a higher converting cost or an unsuitable pack.

This guide explains how micron, gauge and yield are connected and how buyers can choose a practical thickness for packaging, printing and lamination.

What Does Micron Mean in BOPP Film?

One micron, written as μm, is one thousandth of a millimeter. A 20 μm film is therefore 0.020 mm thick. Some markets use gauge instead of micron, so the unit should always be stated clearly in quotations and purchase orders.

Nominal thickness is only part of the specification. Buyers should also review thickness tolerance and profile because uneven film can affect winding, coating weight, printing pressure and roll appearance.

How Thickness Changes Film Performance

Thinner film normally provides more square meters per kilogram and can reduce material use.

Thicker film usually increases stiffness, handling strength and visual body.

Machine stability may improve with thickness, but excessive stiffness can create folding or converting problems.

Barrier generally changes with thickness, although coatings, metallization and structure can have a larger effect.

Roll diameter, roll weight and the number of running meters per roll all change with thickness.

Indicative Thickness Ranges

The following ranges are general starting points rather than universal standards. Thin 10–12 μm BOPP is often considered where high yield and low material weight are important. General printing and flexible-packaging structures frequently use grades around 15–20 μm, depending on the job.

BOPP thermal lamination film often falls in a broader finished-thickness range because it includes a bonding layer. Premium print finishing, labels and special functional coatings may use higher thicknesses when body, protection or a particular tactile effect is required.

The correct commercial thickness depends on the exact resin, coating, adhesive layer and film design. A 20 μm plain BOPP and a 20 μm coated functional film should not be assumed to have identical yield or performance.

How to Estimate Square-Meter Yield

For a simple uncoated BOPP estimate, square meters per kilogram can be approximated as 1,000 divided by film density and thickness in microns. Using an approximate polypropylene density of 0.90–0.91 g/cm³, a 20 μm film provides roughly 55 m²/kg before allowing for grade-specific additives, coatings and production tolerance.

Always use the supplier’s confirmed density or actual roll data for purchasing calculations. Matte, pearlized, white, coated and metallized films may differ from a simple plain-film estimate.

Choose Thickness According to the Application

For high-speed packaging, confirm web tension, stiffness and wrinkle control at the target thickness.

For printing, confirm treatment, ink coverage, register stability and drying conditions.

For lamination, consider both film thickness and the adhesive or thermal bonding layer.

For cartons and book covers, evaluate curl, crease performance, abrasion and the desired surface feel.

For metallized or barrier structures, qualify barrier after the complete converting process.

Roll Specifications Matter as Much as Micron

A complete order should state width, length, core inner diameter, maximum roll diameter, maximum roll weight, winding direction, splice allowance and packaging method. Two quotations with the same micron may still represent different usable output if roll length or tolerance differs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is thinner BOPP always cheaper? Not necessarily. It may reduce material consumption, but poor machinability, more breaks or lower protection can increase total cost.

Can a buyer change from 20 μm to 15 μm without testing? A down-gauging trial should reproduce printing, lamination, sealing, packing speed and distribution conditions before approval.

Does micron include the adhesive layer in thermal film? Finished thickness normally includes the film construction, but quotations should clearly state total thickness and layer structure.
