Soft Touch Films That Survive —30°C Freezing Transport
A luxury skincare brand in Paris orders 50,000 rigid boxes with a velvet-soft matte finish. The boxes are packed in Shanghai in October. By the time they reach the distributor in Moscow — via truck through Siberia in December — the outside temperature has been below —20°C for two solid weeks.
The buyer opens the first carton. The soft touch coating, which felt like suede at the factory, now feels like cracked plastic. The lamination has delaminated from the board. The edges are lifting. The entire premium unboxing experience — the one the brand spent a year designing — is ruined before the customer ever touches it.
This is not an edge case. Premium packaging moves through cold-chain logistics and freezing ground transport every day. Cosmetic compacts traveling from Guangzhou to Harbin. Spirit boxes moving from Scotland to Alberta. Luxury chocolate packaging shipped from Belgium to Scandinavian retailers. And too many of them arrive with failed lamination because the film was never designed to handle the cold.
Why Freezing Weather Destroys Standard Laminations
Standard thermal lamination films use adhesive formulations that are optimized for ambient factory conditions — roughly 20°C to 30°C. At these temperatures, the adhesive is flexible, the polymer chains are mobile, and the bond is strong.
But drop the temperature to —20°C or below, and three things happen simultaneously:
First, the adhesive layer enters its glass transition zone. The polymer chains lose mobility. The adhesive that was flexible and compliant at room temperature becomes rigid and brittle. A rigid adhesive cannot absorb mechanical stress. When the board expands and contracts with temperature changes, the adhesive cannot flex with it — so it cracks.
Second, the coefficient of thermal expansion differs between the BOPP film and the paperboard substrate. BOPP and paperboard shrink at different rates as the temperature drops. This differential shrinkage creates shear stress at the bond line. If the adhesive is already brittle, that shear stress is enough to initiate delamination — starting at the edges and spreading inward.
Third, and most critically for soft touch films, the tactile coating layer itself stiffens. Soft touch films achieve their velvety feel through a specialized top coating — often a polyurethane or modified acrylate formulation — that is soft and compliant at room temperature. In standard formulations, this coating layer becomes rigid in extreme cold. The surface that felt like suede at 20°C feels like sandpaper at —20°C.
The combined effect is a lamination that has lost its bond strength, lost its flexibility, and lost its tactile quality — all because the film was designed for a factory in a temperate climate, not a shipping container in a Siberian winter.
Engineered for Extreme Climates and Premium Quality
The solution is not to avoid cold-weather markets. The solution is to use a soft touch lamination film whose adhesive chemistry and coating formulation are engineered to maintain performance across the full temperature range the package will actually experience.

Scratch and scuff resistance. Where standard soft touch films have one job (feel nice), ours has two. The film surface is engineered to resist scratching, scuffing, and abrasion during transit.
