The Lamination Machine Operator’s Cheat Sheet: Paper Thickness, Film Type, and Temperature
Every lamination operator has a notebook somewhere — maybe a real one, maybe in their head — with scribbled numbers for different paper-film combinations. This article is that notebook, cleaned up and explained. If you are new to running a laminator, or if you have been doing it for years but never had the underlying logic laid out clearly, this is for you.
The most important operating parameters for a thermal lamination machine are roller temperature, machine speed, and nip pressure. But the right settings depend on three things about your job: the paper grammage, the paper coating type, and the film you are using. Let us take them one at a time.
Paper grammage — weight per square meter in grams — is the single biggest driver of heat requirements. Heavier paper absorbs more energy from the heated roller before the adhesive layer reaches activation temperature. Think of it this way: 80 gsm paper at 0.08 mm thick is like a thin blanket that the heat passes through quickly. 350 gsm board at roughly 0.4 mm thick is like a thick quilt that soaks up heat before the adhesive gets what it needs. As a general rule, for every 50 gsm increase in paper weight, you should increase roller temperature by 3°C to 5°C, or reduce speed by 15% to 20%, to maintain the same bond quality.
Paper coating type also matters. Coated papers (art paper, C1S, C2S) have a smooth, clay-coated surface that provides uniform contact with the adhesive. Uncoated papers (offset, bond, kraft) have a porous, fibrous surface that the melted adhesive can sink into before it has time to form a continuous bond. Thermal lamination on uncoated paper typically requires 5°C to 10°C higher temperature to ensure the adhesive stays fluid long enough to form a surface film before being absorbed into the paper fibers. Some operators also increase pressure slightly on uncoated stock to force the adhesive into better contact.
Now let us talk about the film. BOPP thermal lamination film comes in three main surface finishes: gloss, matte, and soft-touch. Each behaves slightly differently because of differences in the film’s thermal conductivity and heat tolerance.
Gloss BOPP film is the workhorse. It has the highest heat tolerance and the widest processing window. Standard operating temperature for gloss film on 128-200 gsm coated paper is 95°C to 105°C at 25-40 m/min. The film has a mirror-smooth surface that produces maximum clarity and reflectivity when properly laminated. Gloss film is the most forgiving of the three finishes — it tolerates a wider temperature range and recovers better from minor parameter deviations.
Matte BOPP film runs at similar temperatures to gloss but often benefits from slightly higher pressure because the matte surface texture must be impressed into the cooling adhesive layer. Typical settings: 100°C to 110°C at 20-35 m/min. Matte film is slightly less transparent than gloss because the surface texture scatters light, which also means it hides minor paper surface imperfections better — a practical advantage if your printed stock has slight orange peel or roller marks.
Soft-touch film requires the most careful temperature control. The soft-touch coating on the film surface has a lower heat tolerance than plain BOPP — exceeding 110°C can cause the soft-touch layer to develop a shiny patch or lose its velvet texture. Typical operating range: 90°C to 105°C at 15-30 m/min. Running soft-touch film is a lesson in discipline: the temptation is to crank up the heat for faster production, but doing so will ruin the very surface effect the customer is paying extra for.
Based on production data we have collected across thousands of lamination runs, here is a practical reference table for BOPP thermal lamination:
80-105 gsm coated paper (gloss/matte film): 90-100°C, 25-35 m/min, medium pressure
128-157 gsm coated paper (gloss/matte film): 95-105°C, 25-40 m/min, medium pressure
200-250 gsm coated paper (gloss/matte film): 100-115°C, 20-35 m/min, medium-high pressure
300-350 gsm board (gloss/matte film): 110-120°C, 15-25 m/min, high pressure
Soft-touch film on any paper 128-300 gsm: 90-105°C, 15-30 m/min, medium pressure
These are starting points, not rigid rules. Every machine is different, every film batch varies slightly, and your workshop conditions (ambient temperature, humidity, machine wear) will shift these numbers. The smart operator uses these as a baseline and adjusts based on the output they see.
PET thermal lamination film runs noticeably hotter. PET’s higher thermal resistance means the roller temperature must be 15°C to 25°C higher than for BOPP to achieve the same adhesive temperature at the film-adhesive interface. Typical PET settings: 110°C to 130°C for coated papers, with speed reduced by 10-20% compared to BOPP at the same paper weight. PET film is also stiffer, which means unwind tension must be slightly higher than BOPP to maintain flat web tracking.
Here are some operator heuristics that experienced hands develop over time. If the laminated sheet feels cool to the touch within seconds of exiting the machine, your temperature is probably too low — the sheet should feel warm (not hot) for a minute or so after lamination. If you see a thin line of adhesive residue on the delivery tray below the paper edges, your pressure is too high. If the first 10-20 sheets of a run look different from sheet number 500, your machine has not reached thermal equilibrium before you started counting production. Run 30-50 warm-up sheets through the machine before beginning the actual job.
